To that end, our coalition envisions a participatory budgeting process that:<\/span>\n\n&nbsp;\n<ul class=\"resetStyling\">\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redistributes public money into Black and Brown neighborhoods, and other communities that have experienced historic disinvestment and neglect across Boston.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gives power to people who don\u2019t currently feel empowered by electoral politics and other existing democratic processes.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creates opportunities for communities to learn about Boston\u2019s $4 billion budget, and to build shared knowledge and analysis around the systems that impact their lives.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers the knowledge and expertise of people most impacted by systemic oppression.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is designed, led, and facilitated by grassroots organizations and individuals fighting for justice in their neighborhoods and communities. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-042c4ea elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"042c4ea\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How do we do it?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a4981f0 text-paragraphSpacing elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a4981f0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order for Boston\u2019s participatory budgeting process to center justice and equity as core values, it must be designed and led by communities most directly impacted by systems of oppression.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the past several months, the Better Budget Alliance has worked with the City of Boston to design an ordinance that outlines the governance structures surrounding participatory budgeting. One of the most important aspects of this ordinance is the creation of a <\/span><b>participatory budgeting oversight board, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is responsible for <\/span><b>designing and overseeing the<\/b> <b>entire participatory budgeting process. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This powerful board will determine how justice and equity are woven into the fabric of the participatory budgeting process. For this reason, we envision an oversight board that is led primarily by working-class BIPOC residents, as well as other individuals who have been most directly impacted by oppressive systems in our city.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To realize this vision for an effective and diverse oversight board, it is important to pass a version of this ordinance that gives the board sufficient power over the participatory budgeting process. You can support this vision by <\/span><b>telling your city councilor to support the BBA\u2019s participatory budgeting ordinance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and by <\/span><b>applying to join the oversight board<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Spring of 2023.
